St. Peter's, Soberton and Holy Trinity, Newtown

Holy Trinity, Newtown

The church at Soberton almost certainly dates from the Norman Period, maybe even earlier. Additions were made in the 13th century, and the present west tower was built in the 16th century. St. Peter's was a chapel of the mother church at Meonstoke until 1897, when it became independent and acquired its own Vicar, the Rev. William Morley.

In the meantime, the ecclesiastical parish of Newtown was formed around 1850, and its new church was built with money from the owner of Rookesbury Park, near Wickham. The first Vicar was the Rev. William Allen, followed by his son Edward. Between them they served the parish for 63 years.

In 1952 the two ecclesiastical parishes of Soberton and Newtown came together as one, with one vicar.
